Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect behind a series of unforgettable images worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
His passing follows less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
- Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
- Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.
The fashion world laments the passing to a true visionary whose influence on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
