California's Governor Confirms He Is Considering a Presidential Campaign for 2028
Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he will decide on whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 elections wrap up.
"Absolutely, it would be dishonest if I denied it," Newsom stated when questioned about giving serious thought to a campaign for president following the 2026 ballots. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."
The governor's tenure as governor ends in January 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. However, he noted that any choice is still years away.
"The future will decide," he said.
Rising Profile as a Administration Opponent
Newsom has stepped forward as a prominent critic of the current federal leadership, employing his digital presence and advocating for a proposition that would increase Democratic House seats in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has invited attacks from adversaries.
Controversy Over Funds
Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom is indifferent about Californians in a Sunday segment on Fox News. Duffy announced plans to withhold government money from California and warned suspending the power to provide CDLs.
"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from the state," Duffy said, in the wake of a recently reported deadly accident in California involving an non-citizen trucker that caused fatalities and injured individuals.
The governor's team noted that the national authorities had reauthorized the individual's authorization on several occasions, which allowed him to secure a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.
Duffy had earlier indicated he was withholding $40 million from the state for not enforcing English language requirements for CDL holders.
Strong Response from the Governor's Office
"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, still doesn't understand federal law," the governor's team said in a recent comment countering the secretary's comments. "For now, as opposed to this individual, we'll stick to the facts: California commercial driver's license holders had a accident mortality rate much lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than California. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."
Public Opinion and Campaign Considerations
A recently conducted poll found that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate said that the governor must consider running for the White House in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has risen to an average of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has decreased from an typical level of previous highs to under 40%.
In previous months, Newsom remarked while traveling several key regions that he had "no idea" about his plans for the next presidential election.
He also referenced his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.
"The notion that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was always in the back of the classroom – the idea that you would even throw that out is, alone, remarkable," he commented. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in the next election and who meets that moment. And that is the issue for the U.S. citizens."
