Israelis have gathered around the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The assault resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most deadliest day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel reacted by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are considered accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"The violent opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.

He also vowed to "achieve all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will not present a danger to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The government authorities postponed official commemorations until October 16th - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but events still were held across the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the relatives of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast throughout Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held around the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' delegations convened in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to review the conditions of the agreement.

A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations indicated that an night meeting of indirect talks started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative explained the day's discussions ended without concrete outcomes, because of differences over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not restart hostilities after the opening period of the agreement.

He noted that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to deliver any major advancement," but mentioned that intermediaries are making efforts to close the differences between the both parties.

Critical Issues in Discussions

  • A permanent truce
  • The swap of the hostages still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance distribution
  • Post-war administration of the region

Public Feeling

In the city's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother endured the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were lost their lives and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - shared: "No place appears as home anymore and until all the hostages are released no one will have peace of mind."

"When we see everybody home returned, we can relax again. Then we can start to rebuild," she added.

In front of the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel states 48 remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.

Demonstrator one woman explained: "It's necessary do every compromise necessary for the captives to return. But we sincerely need promises that we will be safe."

Opinion polls now consistently show that around 70% of Israeli citizens want the hostilities to conclude in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.

Palestinian Conditions

At the area of the music event, grieving people assembled to honor the dead.

From there, the sound of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the severe Israeli bombardment continued.

In the urban center, bombardments were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side district, area and Nasr districts and in the east side district of the community, as well the settlement to the northwest.

"As the evening arrives, the fear arrives with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing previously, shared.

"My family are terrified of the attacks. All the night we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my little child who puts his head on me the entire evening."

"Continuously we look at the reports to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."

Medical Crisis

The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had received the bodies of six people by the midday, including a trio who died in an Israeli attack in the south part district.

A different healthcare center in the southern city of Khan Younis said additional victims had been delivered. An individual was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for assistance to the southern area, medical staff reported.

The territory's health ministry said a significant number of the {territ
