Weather experts are saying an icy commencement to the new year, with snow expected across much of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Plans Continue Despite Forecasts

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay events are planned to go ahead, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This comes despite weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," said the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Open but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and clear skies. Temperatures are expected to be chilly, so warm wraps vital, according to forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for Friday

Moving into Friday, advisories are in place for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• People have been urged to plan for delays for journeys on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on trains and buses.

Readings Expected to Plummet Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Advisories Activated

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials stated this indicated the weather was expected to trigger notable consequences across health and social care services. This encompasses a potential rise in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.

The advice for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in safely, preparing for winter conditions is utterly key.
