New York Unveils Reporting Tool for Citizens to Submit ICE Videos After Detentions of Four US Citizens

New York state AG has launched a fresh digital platform urging residents to share visual evidence of federal immigration enforcement around the state. This move comes just a day after a significant immigration operation disrupted Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering widespread demonstrations.

US Citizens Detained During Enforcement Action

A congressional representative disclosed during a Wednesday press conference that four US citizens were detained and kept for "almost a full day" following the enforcement action. Protests erupted in New York on consecutive evenings.

"All New York residents is entitled to exist without intimidation," the AG declared in a release.

"Anyone who observed and recorded federal operations yesterday, I encourage you to provide that footage with us. We are committed to assessing these submissions and determining any violations of law."

Submission Process

The form includes fields to send images and video footage of the operation, along with a area to specify location information. When submitting, submitters must tick a box that acknowledges that "the attorney general could utilize any documents, photographs, or videos in a legal proceeding, such as in a court case or government document."

Information about the Manhattan Operation

The enforcement action, which witnesses say involved over fifty federal agents, occurred in a popular neighborhood of NYC where counterfeit purses, items, goods and merchandise are regularly available en masse – typically to sightseers.

Recordings of Tuesday's raid depict numerous hooded and equipped personnel securing and holding a person, and pushing back witnesses. Masses of residents followed the personnel along the roads. An military-style transport was observed moving along the urban roads.

Political Response

In a Wednesday press conference organized with the New York immigrant rights coalition, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democratic representative, stated that four US citizens were detained by ICE for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be taken for unjustly." He clarified the citizens were released on Wednesday with no accusations made.

"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," he stated. "This constitutes a armed campaign to provoke unrest. It is merely a justification to incite violence for federal officials to bring in the military to prevent violence that they have created."

Widespread Condemnation

Anger over the federal action rapidly grew – all three NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the incident, as did NY's governor.

"Repeatedly, the current administration chooses oppressive displays that create fear, not safety. It needs to cease," one mayoral candidate wrote.

The city's immigrant rights groups voiced concern also.

"ICE descended on Chinatown in NYC with armored transports, hooded officers and protective equipment to target local sellers attempting to earn income. This operation had no relation to citizen protection and was entirely about intimidating residents and neighborhoods," remarked the president of a rights organization.

Official Guidelines

Official guidelines bans the holding of citizens and the organization has said it will not apprehend American nationals. However, independent reporting has revealed that over 170 citizens have been detained unlawfully by immigration authorities since the start of the existing leadership.

Ongoing Trend

ICE raids have been becoming more common in NY and around the country recently.

A mid-October raid in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an refuge facility of the current administration. Demonstrations opposing federal operations are widespread including allegations of aggression and inhumane treatment.

Most recently, a document filed by advocacy organizations claimed healthcare failures of expectant mothers in detention centers.
