Recent Antibiotics Celebrated as a 'Pivotal Moment' in Combating Drug-Resistant Gonorrhoea

The first new treatments for gonorrhoea in decades are being described as a "major milestone" in the effort against superbug strains of the infection, according to researchers.

An International Public Health Issue

The sexually transmitted infection are on the rise globally, with estimates suggesting over 82 million instances each year. Notably increased rates are reported in Africa and nations within the World Health Organization's Western Pacific region, which spans from China and Mongolia to New Zealand. Across England, cases have hit a record high, while figures across Europe in 2023 were three times higher compared to those in 2014.

“The clearance of new treatments for gonorrhoea is an critical and opportune advancement in the context of increasing worldwide cases, the spread of superbugs and the extremely scarce available drugs currently available.”

Public health authorities are deeply concerned about the rise in treatment-resistant strains. The global health body has listed it as a "priority pathogen". Recent surveillance showed that resistance to key first-line drugs like cefixime and ceftriaxone increased dramatically between 2022 and 2024.

A Pair of Novel Drugs Secure Approval

One new antibiotic, alternatively called Nuzolvence, was cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration in December for use against gonorrhoea. This infection can lead to serious health problems, including the inability to conceive. Experts hope that focused deployment of this new drug will help hinder the development of resistance.

Another new antibiotic, developed by the drugmaker GSK, was also approved in the same week. This treatment, which is also used to treat urinary tract infections, was demonstrated in studies to be able to combat drug-resistant strains of the gonorrhoea bacteria.

An Innovative Approach to Creation

Zoliflodacin emerged from a new, not-for-profit approach for drug creation. The charitable organization GARDP partnered with the drug firm its industry partner to bring it to fruition.

“This approval represents a significant shift in the therapy of superbug gonorrhoea, which previously has been staying ahead of our drug pipeline.”

Research Study Data and Worldwide Availability

According to data published in a prominent scientific publication, zoliflodacin cured the vast majority of cases of the STI. This puts it on an comparable level with the existing first-line therapy, which uses two antibiotics. The study included nearly 1,000 patients from various regions including Belgium, the Netherlands, South Africa, Thailand and the US.

Under the terms of its unique model, the non-profit has the ability to license and sell the drug in many regions with limited resources.

Medical professionals on the front lines have voiced hope. Access to a single-dose, oral treatment of this kind is described as a "critical tool" for public health efforts. This is viewed as essential to reduce the burden of the disease for individuals and to halt the transmission of untreatable gonorrhoea globally.
