The Brothers from the Dagestani Region Excelling in Mixed Martial Arts and with Man Utd.

Ibragim Ibragimov grins as he thinks about how his family's life has changed since moving to England from Dagestan a decade ago.

"I love it here," the PFL competitor states.

"My father and I frequently comment, 'this is the country I ought to have been born in.'"

The young man departed his homeland in the Caucasus region of Russia because his father believed a relocation covering more than 3,000 miles promised better professional prospects for him and his siblings.

The original plan was for Ibragim and his three brothers – Amir (17), Gazik (16), and Muhammad (15) – to finish school before joining one of the nation's colleges.

However, life has turned out slightly distinct for the Ibragimov household.

Ibragim is now a professional MMA fighter and is viewed as one of the top talents in the PFL, a leading MMA organization.

His brothers have taken a separate route in sport and have each been signed by Manchester United – with Amir vying for a place in the senior squad.

"Our key thing for us is to squeeze everything out of our sports," says Ibragim.

"I hope them to play for all of the finest teams in the world. Now it is Man United, tomorrow it might be a different team."

From Grapplers to Football Prodigies

Situated in the south of Russia, Dagestan holds a mystical reputation among combat sports enthusiasts for generating a host of UFC titleholders in the past few years.

The area has a rich tradition in grappling, thriving in the combat sambo discipline and producing numerous Olympic and world champions.

This achievement is no accident, however, as youth from the region are frequently encouraged to begin combat sports, particularly wrestling, almost as soon as they can stand.

"As a young, my dad was always telling me and my younger brothers that we needed to be powerful, first to defend yourself, your family, and your companions," states Ibragim.

"Therefore we all got used to combat, and that's why people understands how to fight in Dagestan. It's unsurprising."

"Amir was a excellent wrestler. You can observe the move from wrestling to football; clearly, it assisted my little brothers a lot."

"Some of the footballers he faces lack the identical foundation he possesses. That's why he's solid, powerful and incredibly driven – because of wrestling."

Amir was only nine years old when he was being tested at Sheffield United. Not knowing of his real age, trainers grouped him with boys five years older.

He was not intimidated by the mistake and was perfectly capable holding his own against older players because of his background in wrestling.

"They thought Amir and I were the same age, apparently," says Ibragim.

Amir was signed, together with Ibragim's younger brothers Gazik and Muhammad.

The family's stay in South Yorkshire was short-lived, though, as just weeks after signing for the Blades, Manchester United became aware of Amir's ability and he transferred over the Pennines consequently.

"They faced Manchester United in a tournament and Amir scored a brilliant free-kick," says Ibragim.

"One of their talent spotters watched him play and selected him immediately."

Six years after joining the Old Trafford club and at the age of 15, Amir was one of the most youthful players in the club's records to train with the first team when he achieved this in April 2023.

"Do you know what he told me? 'This is where I should be'," Ibragim reveals.

"Is he able to be a first-team player for Manchester United? Without a doubt. They should allow all the youthful players get game time right now."

"I don't think they would play worse than the existing first-team players. I think the youngsters are hungrier than the present squad members."

Following that, Gazik and Muhammad, the latter once part of the academy of Manchester City, have also transferred to Manchester United.

"Gazik, this kid is gifted," adds Ibragim.

"He picked up every skill faster than the others. He's a good defender. He's going to be like a modern Rio Ferdinand for Man United."

'The Goal' to Compete at Old Trafford

Ibragim has now relocated to Manchester and spends most of his days sharpening his MMA abilities at a local gym.

In August, he passed three weeks in his native region at Khabib Nurmagomedov's gym, helping Islam Makhachev get ready for a late-year UFC title fight.

"I would never have imagined I would be learning under Khabib," Ibragim says.

"He was the best fighter in the world – and we constantly used to idolize him when we were growing up."

"Today, I'm here in his gym and sparring alongside Islam Makhachev."

Recently working with two UFC titleholders from Dagestan, it is unsurprising Ibragim says he is eager to claim a world title of his own someday.

However that does not prevent him from sometimes dreaming of playing for United and stepping out on the hallowed turf at Old Trafford, much like his brothers.

"I had a PlayStation at home and I constantly used to play as Man United, scoring goals with Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez," he says.

"Now, for my brothers to be Man United players, it's similar to a fantasy realized."

"An event at Old Trafford? It's a dream for me. I was speaking to the PFL guys about it to see if they could do it. It would be huge."
