The Mayor-Elect states his intention to live in historic Gracie Mansion
The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that sparked debate during his election bid.
A Traditional Abode
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors since the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core issue, hesitated to declare this decision immediately following his triumph in November.
"My choice was based on the security of my family and the need to dedicating my full attention on enacting the affordability agenda voters supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district known for its diverse immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To the people of Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he noted.
"Although my address will change there, Astoria will forever remain a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
A Contentious Issue
During his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
However his opponents, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the apartment even though he hails from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg argued it should be a place for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
A Grand New Home
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience surroundings a stark contrast to his humble Astoria home.
Adorned in butter yellow paint, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Within, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, meaning the city sets limits on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.
Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than what many can afford.
It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
