Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... For Now.

Vince Gilligan never anticipated that Pluribus would become a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

With the first season of the hit sci-fi show coming to an end—and Season 2 officially in the works—Gilligan and his team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.

On the Overwhelming Viewer Reception

Anyone might to get swayed by the rampant praise and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is doing his best to avoid both.

“It's like being force fed hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's amazing, but I hear about it from others, and that's by design. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”

Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by what people are saying.”

“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.

The Big Question: Has the showrunner See the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Given that the writers aren't taking cues by fan response, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… sort of.

“There are some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Then again, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.

“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Then again, one could always use the legendary finales?

“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
