What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
No fewer than 16 people perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when attackers fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have called a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.
Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the individuals who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She described the events before the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
